Arts & Letters Salon
|
This group has been launched specifically for those who would like to gather for substantial and spirited (though not spiritual) conversation, a.k.a. dialogue. We welcome those who do not hesitate to voice politically incorrect opinions or pierce sacred cows. We intend to stay non-ideological, non-partisan, and non-political. We will meet once or twice a month on a Sunday, often in a garden setting, for brunch, To help focus our discussions, we will select some complementary essays from the superb portal website ~ Arts & Letter Daily ~ http://aldaily.co... , and from other online resources. A look at the home page of ALD website shows that it covers the intellectual waterfront :"philosophy, aesthetics, literature, language, ideas, criticism, culture, history, music, trends, breakthroughs, disputes, and gossip." Occasionally we will attend a play or other cultural event which will serve as a springboard for cultural conversation. An upcoming meeting will be devoted to a discussion of structure--where to gather, topics, communications, etc.

"Over the past 3 years I've done little besides reading, thinking, and writing, it's time to listen. I'm interested in a lot of things and I'm intrigued by the idea of a discussion with such an "open focus" as A&L Daily."
-
"I would like to discuss the books I'm reading and meet people who are interested in ideas and in talking about them"
-
"I enjoy learning. Love to read and would like to exchange impressions with bright thinkers. Also enjoy good theater. I don't run into many people who are analytic and are really able to think, and who enjoy examining our culture beyond media represe"
-
"AlDaily is my home page. There's always interesting articles there, and I wouldn't mind discussing them with you folks. I actually live in the east bay right now, but I'll be moving to SF soon, so I thought it would be a good time to join."
-
"Hi, I'm a writer and sometime musician and would love the chance to converse with others beyond the small talk of most social events. "

"Salut! I would imagine like most others in the group, I would enjoy the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialog on a wide range of relevant topics, have some fun with the social activities, and make new friends! "
-
"Hi! Born and raised in the Bay Area. I enjoy learning and love wisdom in any form. Looking for an intellectual discussion, new viewpoints, answers for my questions, and questions for my answers. "
-
"Hi I'd like to meet others who enjoy sharing information that has not been generated mindlessly by the MSM!"
-
"Someone once said to the effect that 'living a life without introspection is a shadow life.' I would add, 'introspection is even shallower without reflection.' Life in a vacuum is stasis."
-
"Hi there, I am looking for intelligent and witty conversation about real ideas as apposed to shallow small talk.."
-
"Hello! I'm a writer. Back home in NYC my godparents ran a 'salon,' that included literary critics, artists, musicians and poets. What better place for a great artistic community than SF! "
-
"Hello Tom, I promised myself I would finally look this up. I am interested in social change, economics, international policy and communication. I look forward to a friendly bending of the minds. Other interests cover cooking, camping, theater and"
-
"I'll probably meet you tomorrow, Tom, since I rsvped for the cultureplaces concert. I'm a PhD candidate in history who is still searching for smart and engaging people to discuss almost any topic, though politics and history are obviously a plus."
-

-
"Sounds like a wonderful opportunity for insightful and thoughtful discussions - -and the chance to meet others who enjoy getting together to talk about a variety of topics."

-
"aldaily.com has been my browser's home page for years, and I've infected several other people as well. I'd love to join a group where we discuss some of Arts & Letters' provocative articles."
